Take a Seat — and Get Some Exercise

Spending more time sitting doesn't have to mean giving up on staying active. Whether you're working at a desk, recovering from an injury, traveling, or simply looking for easy ways to move more, chair exercises offer a safe and effective way to improve your health.

Experts say that just a few minutes of seated movement can help boost circulation, strengthen muscles, improve flexibility, reduce stiffness, and even increase energy. They're gentle on the joints, require no special equipment, and can be done almost anywhere.
Here are five simple chair exercises you can start doing today.
1. Seated Marches
Sit up tall with both feet on the floor. Lift one knee toward your chest, lower it, then repeat with the other leg. Continue alternating for 30 to 60 seconds. Benefits: Improves circulation, strengthens the hips and thighs, and gently raises your heart rate.
2. Leg Extensions
Straighten one leg until it's parallel with the floor. Hold for two or three seconds before lowering it. Repeat 10 to 15 times, then switch legs. Benefits: Strengthens the muscles that support your knees and improves leg endurance.
3. Shoulder Rolls
Slowly roll your shoulders forward five times, then backward five times while keeping your back straight. Benefits: Relieves tension in the neck and shoulders, improves posture, and eases stiffness from prolonged sitting.
4. Seated Torso Twists
Sit tall with your feet flat on the floor. Cross your arms over your chest or place your hands on your shoulders. Slowly rotate your upper body to one side, return to center, then twist to the other side. Repeat 10 times. Benefits: Improves spinal flexibility, engages your core muscles, and helps relieve lower back stiffness.
5. Heel and Toe Raises
Keeping your heels on the floor, lift your toes as high as you can. Then lower your toes and lift your heels. Continue alternating for one minute. Benefits: Improves blood flow, strengthens the lower legs, and helps reduce swelling in the feet and ankles.
Remember, every bit of movement counts. Even five or ten minutes of chair exercises throughout the day can improve circulation, ease stiffness, and help you stay active—no gym required.
