Give Your Workout a Boost with Coffee

For many of us, coffee is what gets us moving in the morning. The caffeine in coffee is a stimulant that can increase alertness and reduce feelings of fatigue. Research has also shown that caffeine can improve several aspects of exercise performance, particularly endurance exercise, although the effect varies from person to person.

Caffeine works on the central nervous system, which can make exercise feel a little easier and help you stay focused during your workout. Studies have found potential benefits for activities ranging from walking and cycling to strength training and higher-intensity exercise.
Timing can matter, too. Caffeine levels generally rise in the bloodstream after you drink coffee, which is why many people choose to have a cup before exercising rather than afterward.
Moderation is key. You don't need an extra-large, extra-strong coffee to get a potential benefit. Too much caffeine can leave you feeling jittery, anxious or uncomfortable—and may interfere with sleep later in the day.
And remember that a fancy coffee drink loaded with syrups, whipped cream and sugar is very different nutritionally from a simple cup of coffee.
If coffee is already part of your morning routine, enjoying a cup before you lace up your shoes may give your workout a little extra perk. Just don't forget the other beverage your body needs: water.
