Getting a mammogram can raise some uncomfortable emotions like fear. That can become an excuse to postpone a mammogram, avoid checking out a change, or not ask about family history. But working through those emotions can help you take an important step in protecting your health.
1. IT'S OKAY TO BE NERVOUS.
Waiting for a mammogram or talking about a change in your breast can be stressful. Being worried doesn't mean something is wrong—and avoiding the appointment doesn't make the worry disappear.
2. DON'T LET FEAR MAKE THE DECISION.
If you notice a new lump, nipple change, skin change or something else that's unusual for you, tell your healthcare provider. Most breast changes aren't cancer, but they deserve appropriate evaluation.
3. TAKE SOMEONE WITH YOU.
If an appointment or mammogram makes you anxious, ask a friend, partner or family member to go with you. Sometimes support is as simple as having someone sitting beside you.
