If you haven’t exercised in a while, the idea of “getting fit” can feel like a big assignment. The good news is that you don’t have to join a gym, buy new equipment or suddenly commit to hour-long workouts. Moving more than you do now is a perfectly good place to start. A ten-minute walk after dinner, some stretching in the morning or choosing the stairs instead of the elevator all count.
August is National Wellness Month and a perfect opportunity to start moving a little more. Here are some ways to do it:
Look for opportunities to add movement to things you already do. Walk while you talk on the phone. Park a little farther from the store. Put on some music and tackle a household chore with a little more energy. Take the dog around the block one more time. The goal isn’t to turn every activity into exercise—it’s to rediscover how good it can feel to use your body.
This month, try starting with just 10 minutes of intentional movement a day. Choose something you enjoy enough to do again tomorrow. Once 10 minutes starts feeling like part of your routine, maybe it becomes 15 or 20. That’s how lasting change often happens—not with a dramatic beginning, but with one small step followed by another.
