Fuel Your Future: Eating Well in Your 20s

Between work, school, friends and everything else competing for your attention, eating healthy can easily fall to the bottom of your priority list.

Fast food is convenient; energy drinks promise a quick boost and skipping meals may seem like an easy way to save time or money. But what you eat today helps determine how well your body functions tomorrow.
Good nutrition supports muscle development, brain function, energy levels and a healthy immune system. Over time, balanced eating habits can also help reduce the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Fortunately, eating well doesn't have to be complicated or expensive.  Here are some practical ways to get started:
• Make protein part of your meals. Eggs, beans, chicken, fish, yogurt and lentils help support muscle growth and repair.
• Choose better carbohydrates. Oatmeal, brown rice, whole-grain bread and corn tortillas can provide energy and valuable nutrients.
• Eat more fruits and vegetables. Fresh, frozen and canned varieties can all be nutritious choices. Look for options without added sugar or excessive sodium.
• Watch what you drink. Sugary sodas, sweetened coffees and energy drinks can add significant amounts of sugar and calories.
• Don't overlook fiber. Beans, vegetables, fruit and whole grains support digestive health and can help you feel satisfied longer.
• Plan a few easy meals. Keeping simple ingredients at home can make healthier choices more convenient than another trip through the drive-through.
But eating doesn't mean giving up the foods you enjoy. A homemade burrito with beans, grilled chicken, vegetables and avocado can be both satisfying and nutritious. Even small changes, like choosing water instead of soda or adding vegetables to your favorite meal, can make a difference.
