June 19 is time for National Watch Day. (And just in time for Father’s Day – hint, hint.) Today recognizes an industry that has been around for more than 500 years and still steadily evolving. The history of watches dates to the 15th and 16th centuries with watches during this period featuring only the hour hand.
It wasn't until the 17th century that minutes and seconds were added to the features of watches. Created initially for women, the design of wrist watches were typically elegant pieces of jewelry and strictly worn by women. Men preferred to carry a pocket watch because of the symbolism of being sophisticated and well-to-do. Wrist watches began to transition towards men during WWI, specifically soldiers, because the pocket watch was an impractical item for those wearing uniforms.
As we celebrate the National Watch Day, indulge in a piece that makes a statement. Gifting a watch remains a classic and timeless gift and giving one for an anniversary, graduation, or birthday gift is as sentimental as it gets. June 19th is the perfect time to give this traditional gift to someone you know. You can also share photos of your favorite watches using #NationalWatchDay on social media.
