Emotional Health Begins with Looking Inward

Taking care of yourself means more than paying attention to what you eat or how much you exercise. How you spend your time, where you direct your attention and who you connect with can all influence how you feel. Emotional wellness can begin with simply noticing those things a little more closely.

Try this exercise: identify one thing that regularly drains you and one thing that tends to restore you. Maybe endless scrolling leaves you agitated, while sitting outside makes you calmer. Perhaps saying yes to every request exhausts you, while spending time with a particular friend energizes you. You don’t necessarily have to eliminate the draining thing. Simply start by making a little more room for the restorative one.
This month, deliberately schedule something that makes you feel good emotionally—a phone call, lunch with a friend, gardening, reading, music, a walk outside or simply an hour when nobody needs anything from you. Treat that time as part of taking care of your health rather than something you must earn. Feeling better is a perfectly legitimate reason to do something good for yourself.
