El Paso’s mountains boast great natural walking paths and hiking trails but may seem daunting to some. Here’s a quick guide about how to start to take advantage of the natural beauty and exercise opportunity in our area:
• Gear Up: Wear sturdy, broken-in hiking boots for rocky terrain. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen
• Start Early: In warmer months, start at sunrise to avoid peak, exposed heat, ideally finishing by 10 AM.
• Hydration: Bring more water than you think you need; turn back when half your water is gone.
• Safety: Hike with a partner or inform someone of your route. Keep a fully charged phone.
Now that you are all geared up – here’s where to go:
• Beginner Hiking Trails in El Paso Aztec Caves Trail (Franklin Mountains State Park): Short but steep hike leading to scenic, shallow caves.
• Lost Dog Trail: A relatively flat and wide trail popular for scenic, easy walks.
• Tom Mays Nature Trail (Tom Mays Unit): A very easy, short 0.75-mile loop ideal for exploring local desert flora.
• Cottonwood Trail: Located in the Tom Mays Unit, this offers occasional shade.
