Exercise During Cancer Treatment: Why Movement Matters

By - Ted Escobedo 7 hours ago   1 min read

A cancer diagnosis can leave people feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, and uncertain about what they can do to support their health. While treatment plans often focus on surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and medications, research continues to show that one powerful tool can help patients throughout their cancer journey: physical exercise.

For years, cancer patients were encouraged to rest as much as possible. Today, healthcare professionals recognize that appropriate physical activity can play an important role in improving treatment outcomes, reducing side effects, and enhancing overall quality of life.
One of the most common side effects of cancer treatment is fatigue. Unlike ordinary tiredness, cancer-related fatigue can be severe and persistent. Surprisingly, exercise is one of the most effective ways to combat it.
Studies have found that patients who engage in regular physical activity often report higher energy levels, better stamina, and improved ability to perform daily activities. Even moderate activities such as walking, swimming, or gentle cycling can make a meaningful difference. The Rio Grande Cancer Foundation’s Cancer Help Center will host a special seminar about coping with Cancer-related Fatigue for cancer survivors on June 17 at 6PM.
