How to get Dad (or Grandpa) moving for his health

By - Ted Escobedo 2 hours ago   2 min read

Not all dads play in pick-up basketball leagues, golf or hit the gym. Many men work a full-time job and want to rest and relax instead of working up a sweat. But, motivating the men in your life to take small steps to get more active can have a huge impact on their physical and emotional health. The question is how to get him going. Here are some possible answers:

To get your dad moving, focus on activities you can do together, like taking a 15-minute neighborhood walk after dinner. Frame the conversation around his goals—like having more energy to play with grandkids or simply feeling less stiff—rather than focusing on weight loss or strict medical routines. Here are more tips:
• Start Incredibly Small: The biggest barrier to exercise is feeling overwhelmed or dealing with joint pain.
• Sneak it into the day: Suggest pacing during TV commercials, doing calf raises while brushing teeth, or standing up while folding laundry.
• Low-impact options: Introduce activities that are easy on the joints, such as swimming, chair yoga, or Tai Chi.
• Make It a Shared Experience: Nobody likes to be lectured about their health, but people love spending quality time with their kids.
• Be the workout buddy: Invite him to go bowling, take a short stroll to a local cafe, or play catch at a nearby park.
