How exercise can help your brain

Regular physical exercise isn’t just powerful for your body – it makes your brain stronger as well. Both aerobic exercise and resistance training boost Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF)—a protein that acts like fertilizer for brain cells—improving memory, cognition, and stress resilience.

Here’s the science behind it: Exercise specifically boosts neuron creation in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, which is crucial for learning, memory, and emotional regulation.
Both aerobic exercise (running, swimming, cycling) and resistance training can boost neurogenesis. But the exercise should be consistent moderate-intensity and last at least 30 minutes, 3–5 times per week.
Specifically, running, cycling, and walking improve blood flow to the brain, directly supporting memory and learning. Physical activity like Tai Chi & Dance improves balance and cognitive function, with Tai Chi specifically linked to sustained mental benefits.
