Christmas shopping is great exercise

It may become harder to fit in a workout during the busy holiday season. Not only does finding time present a challenge, but all the shopping can deplete our energy. The good news is experts agree that may be a gift in itself. Here are some ways to physically get the most from your holiday season.
• Walking: Walking around stores and malls can add up to a lot of steps. In fact, you can burn up to 200 calories by walking around shops, which is similar to the number of calories you'd burn by jogging at the same pace for 30 minutes.
• Strength training: Carrying heavy bags can strengthen your muscles. You can also add strength training to your shopping trip by pushing a cart or loading up your trunk.
• Other movements: Shopping involves bending, twisting, and moving your arms.
Here are some additional tips to make your Christmas season more active:
• Wear a pedometer to track your steps.
• Walk briskly from store to store.
• Take the stairs instead of the escalator.
• Wrap gifts while standing up and walk to put them under the tree.
• Plan an evening of walking around to see Christmas lights
