To help your dog cope with fireworks, try these tips:
1. Create a Safe Space: Designate a safe area: Choose a quiet room, ideally with minimal windows and doors, and make it inviting with familiar items like blankets, toys, and a comfortable bed.
2. Consider a crate: If your dog is crate-trained, their crate can provide a sense of security. Ensure it's comfortable and accessible.
3. Block out noise and light: Close windows and curtains to minimize both the sound and visual flashes of fireworks.
4. Provide comfort: If your dog seeks comfort from you, offer gentle petting and speak in a soothing voice.
5. Use Calming Distractions: Play white noise or music: Consider white noise machines, fans, or calming music (like classical music or dog-specific calming tracks) to mask the fireworks sounds.
6. Engage with toys and treats: Offer interactive toys like puzzle toys or Kongs filled with treats to keep your dog occupied.
7. Maintain normal routines: Try to act as normal as possible to avoid reinforcing anxious. While it's important to offer comfort, avoid excessive fussing or reacting to the fireworks, as this can reinforce anxious behavior.
