Natural Ways to Help Kids Stay Focused This School Year

Every parent has seen it happen. A child sits down to do homework, only to become distracted by the dog, a phone notification, or even the sound of the refrigerator. The good news is that focus isn't something kids simply have—or don't have. Like any skill, concentration can be strengthened. Along with good nutrition, sleep and physical activity, a few simple complementary wellness practices may help students stay calm, focused and ready to learn.

• Mindful Breathing:
Feeling overwhelmed can make it difficult for children to concentrate. Teaching kids to slow down and take a few deep breaths before class, homework or a test can help settle racing thoughts. Try the "5 Breaths" technique: Inhale slowly through the nose for four seconds. Exhale gently through the mouth for four seconds. Repeat five times. It takes less than a minute and can help children feel calmer and more prepared to focus.
• Stretch It Out:
Long periods of sitting can leave children feeling restless. Gentle stretching or simple yoga poses before homework can loosen tight muscles while helping kids transition from a busy school day into study time. A few minutes of movement may be all it takes to reset both body and mind.
• Create a Calm Homework Space:
The environment matters. A quiet, organized workspace with good lighting and limited distractions can make it much easier for children to stay on task. Keep televisions off, silence unnecessary notifications and have school supplies within easy reach.
Helping children succeed in school isn't always about studying longer. Sometimes it's about creating an environment where their brains can do their best work.
