Healthy aging isn't only about taking care of your body. Taking care of your emotional health—and continuing to find reasons to be interested, engaged and excited about life—can be just as important.
One way to support emotional well-being is surprisingly simple: keep giving yourself something to look forward to. It doesn't have to be a European vacation or a major life event. Anticipation can come from plans both big and small—a Saturday breakfast with friends, tending a garden, starting a book, taking a class, volunteering, learning to paint, planning a family dinner or buying tickets to something happening next month.
Learning doesn't have an expiration date. Try something you've never done before or return to something you once enjoyed. Take a cooking class. Learn another language. Pick up a musical instrument. Visit a museum you've driven past for years. The goal isn't becoming an expert. It's giving yourself opportunities to experience something new.
Purpose can change throughout our lives. What gave life meaning at 35 doesn't necessarily have to be what gives it meaning at 65 or 75. Purpose might come from family, faith, friendships, creativity, work, caring for a pet, mentoring someone younger, volunteering or simply being the person who organizes Sunday dinner. You don't necessarily have to find your purpose. Sometimes you can create it – start by making one plan you're genuinely looking forward to.
