Be smart about “prostate health” products

Walk through the supplement aisle and you’ll find plenty of products promising to support your prostate. “Natural,” however, doesn’t mean proven—and a supplement isn't automatically harmless just because you can buy it without a prescription.

1. Don’t believe the big promises.
Be skeptical of anything claiming to “prevent,” “detox” or “protect” you from prostate cancer. If researchers had discovered a supplement proven to prevent prostate cancer, it wouldn’t be a secret hiding in the vitamin aisle.
2. Tell your doctor what you take.
Vitamins, herbs and supplements can interact with medications and may affect other health conditions. Keep your healthcare provider informed about everything you take—even products labeled natural.
3. Use complementary therapies for what they do best.
Yoga, meditation, massage and similar practices can be useful for relaxation, physical activity and stress management. Enjoy those benefits without expecting them to prevent prostate cancer.
