Can Herbs and Spices Help with Blood Sugar?

By - Ted Escobedo 4 hours ago   1 min read

Researchers have studied several herbs and spices for their possible effects on glucose and insulin. While some results are promising, none has been proven to lower blood sugar reliably or replace healthy eating, exercise or diabetes treatment. If you have diabetes, talk with your health care provider before taking concentrated herbal supplements, which can interact with medications or affect blood sugar.

Still, herbs and spices can be an easy—and tasty—addition to a healthy diet. Here are three worth trying:
1. Cinnamon: Add it to oatmeal, plain yogurt, fruit or coffee. Its naturally sweet flavor can also help you cut back on added sugar or syrup.
2. Ginger: Add fresh or ground ginger to stir-fries, vegetables, smoothies or unsweetened tea for a big flavor boost without added sugar.
3. Turmeric: Use it to season roasted vegetables, soups, eggs, chicken or rice. Pair it with other spices to add flavor without relying on sugary sauces.
The takeaway: Think spice rack, not supplement aisle. Herbs and spices can add plenty of flavor while helping you cut back on added sugar.
