The effect of dusty windy days on emotional health

It may not come as news to El Pasoans but dusty and windy days can significantly affect emotional health. High winds and blowing dust act as environmental stressors that contribute to anxiety, irritability, and low energy. These conditions, often accompanied by decreased air quality, can lead to a feeling of restlessness, sleep disruption, and increased reports of depression.

• Increased Anxiety and Irritability: Strong, persistent winds and dust storms can trigger anxiety, restlessness, and a heightened sense of worry. In one study, nearly 86% of participants reported experiencing some form of emotional change during dust storms.
• Lowered Energy and Fatigue: People often experience fatigue, dizziness, and low energy levels during or after dusty and windy events.
• Reduced Cognitive Function: High-intensity winds are linked to poor concentration, forgetfulness, and difficulties in completing tasks.
• Physiological Changes (Ions & Serotonin): Strong winds can strip electrons from air molecules, creating a high concentration of positive ions. This imbalance is linked to elevated stress and reduced serotonin levels, which regulate mood.
• Physical Discomfort: Dust storms cause poor air quality, leading to breathing difficulties (like nasal inflammation) that cause significant mental distress.
Unfortunately, there isn’t much we can do to deal with high winds and dusty days, but experts do recommend staying indoors, sealing windows and doors, and using air purifiers to maintain indoor air quality. If you are caught outside, wear an N95 mask and protective eyewear for your lungs and eyes.
