Your teen may be on an emotional roller coaster during the holidays. Family stress, social pressure, disrupted routines, financial worries, and less sunlight (SAD), can add to their emotional overload as they may show moodiness. Here are some behaviors to look out for:
• Excessive sadness, crying, irritability, or anger.
• Withdrawing from family/friends or favorite activities.
• Significant changes in sleep or appetite/weight.
• Difficulty concentrating, fatigue, unexplained aches.
• Hopelessness, worthlessness, or thoughts of self-harm (call 988).
How to help
• Talk openly: Encourage talking about feelings without judgment.
• Set boundaries: Help them say "no" to overwhelming events and limit social media.
• Maintain routine: Stick to healthy sleep, diet, and exercise.
• Encourage self-care: Promote activities they enjoy (even non-holiday ones) and stress-relief strategies.
• Seek professional help: Therapy (talk, light therapy for SAD) or medication if needed.
