Keep the Bugs Off the Guest List: Natural Ways to Enjoy a Pest-Free Picnic

Outdoor picnics and backyard barbecues are one of the best parts of late spring and summer in El Paso — but mosquitoes and other pests always seem to want an invitation.

With a few citronella candles and plants, you can spend less time swatting bugs and more time enjoying good food, fresh air, and great company.
Citronella candles can be a helpful part of a "layered" pest control strategy for a BBQ, though they are most effective in small, calm areas. They work by releasing oil that masks the scents (like carbon dioxide and sweat) that attract mosquitoes and other pests like flies and gnats.
Effective Usage Tips
• Burn Early: Light candles 15–30 minutes before guests arrive to allow the scent to disperse and begin deterring insects.
• Create a Perimeter: Place multiple candles around the seating area and food tables to create a "barrier". One candle is rarely enough for a large yard.
• Strategic Placement: Put candles on the ground or on elevated surfaces like shelves to help the scent spread.
• Mind the Wind: Even a light breeze can blow the repellent scent away. Use wind-resistant holders or place candles in less breezy spots.
• Proximity Matters: The repellent effect is strongest in the immediate radius of the candle.
