How stress impacts your skin

Ever notice a breakout right before a big deadline or your skin looking dull during a stressful stretch? That’s not a coincidence. Stress doesn’t just affect your mood—it shows up on your skin in real, visible ways.

When you’re under pressure, your body releases cortisol, often called the “stress hormone.”  While it may be helpful in short bursts, ongoing stress keeps cortisol levels elevated, which can throw your skin off balance which leads to:
 • Breakouts: Increased oil production can clog pores and lead to acne flare-ups
• Redness and irritation: Conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea can worsen
• Dryness and sensitivity: A weakened skin barrier makes it harder to retain moisture
• Slower healing: Blemishes and irritation can linger longer than usual
• Premature aging: Chronic stress can break down collagen, contributing to fine lines over time
Simple ways to support your skin (and yourself)
• Prioritize sleep: This is when your skin does most of its repair work
• Move your body: Even light activity helps regulate stress hormones
• Take mini breaks: Deep breathing, stretching, or a quick walk can reset your system
• Keep skincare simple: Avoid harsh products when your skin is already stressed
• Fuel your body well: Hydration and nutrient-rich foods support skin health from within
