Making healthier choices at local Mexican restaurants

Traditional Mexican cuisine is naturally rich in fresh vegetables, fiber-filled beans, and lean proteins, making it easy to enjoy a nutritious meal with a few simple adjustments.

Smart Ordering & Cooking Tips
• Opt for Corn Over Flour: Choose soft corn tortillas instead of flour. Corn tortillas are made from whole grains and typically have fewer calories, less fat, and more fiber than flour tortillas.
• Select Grilled Proteins: Pick lean, grilled meats like chicken (pollo), steak (carne asada), fish (pescado), or shrimp (camarón). Avoid deep-fried or fatty meats like carnitas (simmered pork) or chorizo (sausage).
• Choose Whole Beans: Order whole black or pinto beans (frijoles a la charro) instead of refried beans. Refried beans are often prepared with lard and topped with extra cheese.
• Watch the Chips and Dips: Tortilla chips are deep-fried and high in calories. Limit yourself to a small portion or skip them entirely.
• Use salsa as your primary condiment since it is fat-free and low-calorie.
• Manage Dairy & Garnishes: Swap sour cream and heavy queso for guacamole or fresh avocado. While healthy, enjoy avocado in moderation as it is calorie dense.
