Homemade Electrolyte Elixir
Ingredients
1½ cups unsweetened coconut water
½ cup fresh orange juice
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
Pinch of salt
Ice for serving
Directions
Combine 1½ cups coconut water, ½ cup orange juice, 2 tablespoons lime juice and a pinch of salt in a large glass; stir until the salt dissolves. Pour into 2 ice-filled glasses.
Keep in mind:
Look for unsweetened coconut water and orange juice in the beverage aisle and refrigerated section. Both the coconut water and orange juice should have just one ingredient listed on the label. You can also use fresh-squeezed orange juice if you prefer.
Coconut water is packed with electrolytes, including potassium, sodium, magnesium and calcium. These minerals can help you rehydrate after exercise. They can also help you rehydrate if you’re sick or in treatment for cancer and experiencing symptoms that cause dehydration like vomiting, fever or diarrhea. The potassium in coconut water may also help lower blood pressure.
Orange juice contains vitamin C, which may help reduce inflammation and support a healthy immune system. Orange juice also contains magnesium, another electrolyte that supports hydration as well as helps to regulate fluid balance.
A pinch of salt provides just a touch of sodium. Fine salts like table salt or fine sea salt will dissolve quickly.
