Commit to one doctor’s appointment

Guys can find a hundred reasons to put off going to the doctor. You feel fine. You’re busy. You’ll get around to it. But when it comes to prostate cancer and your overall health, one of the best things you can do is simply show up. This year, make yourself a promise: schedule a checkup and have an honest conversation about your health.

1. Know where you stand. A routine visit gives you a chance to talk about your health, family history and personal risk factors. Prostate cancer risk increases with age, and having a father or brother with prostate cancer can increase your risk.
2. Have the PSA conversation. Not every man needs prostate cancer screening at the same age. Your doctor can help you understand the potential benefits and risks of PSA screening and decide when—or whether—testing is appropriate for you.
3. Don’t wait until something hurts. Early prostate cancer often has no symptoms. A doctor’s visit when you feel healthy gives you the opportunity to talk about prevention, screening and other health concerns before something sends you there.
