Our diets can help or harm our bodies. As we look at Colorectal Cancer this month, we offer these diet tips to help maintain a healthy colon.
• Drink plenty of water to keep stool hydrated. Dehydration is a major cause of constipation.
• Consume a diet that is low in red and processed meats. Eating large amounts of red and processed meats is associated with a higher risk of colon cancer.
• Consume a diet that is high in fiber. Fiber helps to retain water and stimulates the growth of healthy bacteria in the colon. Raw fruits and vegetables offer the best combination of fiber and nutrients.
If you are looking for fruit that can offer the most benefit, consider these:
Raspberries win the fiber race at 8 grams per cup. Mangoes, persimmons, and guavas are also good sources of fiber: A mango has 5 grams, a persimmon has 6, and 1 cup of guava has about 9. Dark-colored vegetables. In general, the darker the color of the vegetable, the higher the fiber content.
