Not all chocolate is created equal

Not all chocolate is created equal

There has been a lot of hype about the many health benefits of dark chocolate. While not based on the most conclusive research, dark chocolate is undoubtedly healthier than other forms of chocolate. When choosing a healthy dark chocolate for eating, here are the qualities to look for in a healthy bar.

Research points to flavanols – a type of polyphenol in cocoa that helps lower blood pressure and improve vascular function, improve cognitive function, and even provides UV protection for our skin. Note there are many counter-arguments to this research. Dark chocolate has a higher proportion of flavanols than milk chocolate. A higher percentage of cacao (cocoa) means a higher amount of flavanols. Still, it is not all good news. For those trying to lose weight or maintain low blood sugar, it is important to remember that chocolate in almost all of its forms is high in calories and is best eaten in moderation.

  • High cacao content no less than 60% is best
  • Low sugar content
  • Few additives and overall ingredients
  • No added flavor
  • No preservatives
  • Not “Dutched” or processed with alkali
  • Processed at a low temperature.
