Diet for Cancer Survivors: Building a Foundation for Long-Term Health

After completing cancer treatment, many survivors ask the same question: "What should I eat now?" While there is no single diet that can guarantee cancer will never return, research consistently shows that a healthy, balanced eating pattern can help cancer survivors maintain their strength, improve their quality of life, reduce the risk of other chronic diseases, and potentially lower the risk of cancer recurrence.

Experts generally agree that the best diet for cancer survivors is one that emphasizes whole, minimally processed foods, plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats, and whole grains.
Colorful fruits and vegetables are packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants that help support overall health. Nutrition experts often recommend aiming for a variety of colors throughout the week, including leafy greens, tomatoes, berries, carrots, peppers, broccoli, and citrus fruits.
The more colorful your plate, the wider the range of beneficial nutrients you are likely to consume. Other foods to incorporate into a cancer survivor’s diet are:
•  Whole Grains such as: Brown rice, Oatmeal, Whole wheat bread, Quinoa, Barley and Whole grain pasta.
• Fiber is especially important because it supports gut health and may help reduce the risk of certain cancers.
• Lean Proteins: Protein plays a vital role in rebuilding tissues, maintaining muscle mass, and supporting immune function. Cancer survivors should include healthy protein sources throughout the day, such as: Fish and seafood, Skinless poultry, Beans and lentils, Tofu and other soy foods, Eggs, Nuts and seeds.
