Being aware of what you eat

Being aware of what you eat

It’s more than halfway through January and those of us who started a new diet for the new year may need some advice to strengthen our resolve. Experts agree that by slowing down and becoming ‘mindful’ while we eat helps to curb binge-eating, reduce the amount we eat and allow us to fully enjoy our food. Mindful eating can also keep your diet on track.

Here are a few simple ways to get started:

If you are new to mindful eating, it’s a good idea to pick one meal per day to focus on these suggestions and then eventually work your way onto every meal.

  • Eat more slowly and don’t rush your meals.
  • Chew thoroughly.
  • Eliminate distractions by turning off the TV and putting down your phone.
  • Eat in silence.
  • Focus on how the food makes you feel.
  • Stop eating when you’re full.
  • Ask yourself why you’re eating, whether you’re truly hungry, and whether the food you chose is healthy.
