We know walking is good exercise to maintain general health, but research shows it is also great for bone health. Walking has been show to slow age-related decline in bone density and may influence factors that help preserve bone strength. In addition, the benefits gained in muscle strength and balance can reduce the risk of falls, a common cause of fractures. The most recent research suggests that walking about 5,000 steps a day – the equivalent of two and a half miles is ideal for maximum bone density benefits in women ages 50-65. To double the effects of your work out, experts suggest picking up the pace and walking briskly for30 minutes to assist in weight loss.
