Some experts believe that watching American football can be an emotional experience that can provide a sense of community, belonging, and accomplishment. It can also be a way to release pent-up feelings and stress. Some of these benefits include:
• Sense of belonging: Fans can feel a sense of belonging to a community that shares their passion for the game.
• Improved self-esteem: Fans can feel better about themselves and have higher social self-esteem.
• Emotional outlet: Fans can channel their frustrations, anger, and stress into the game.
Sense of accomplishment: Fans can feel a sense of accomplishment when their team wins.
• Escape from everyday life: Fans can focus on something they enjoy and take their minds off worries.
Experts do agree that there are marked emotional responses to the game such as:
• Brain chemistry: When a team wins, the brain releases dopamine, which regulates the brain's reward and pleasure centers. When a team loses, the brain releases cortisol, which is released when the body is under stress.
• Behavior: Fans can behave in ways that encourage a cathartic release of tension through shouting, screaming, gesturing, and chanting
