Overcoming exercise obstacles

Overcoming exercise obstacles

For anyone who is overweight or lives a sedentary lifestyle, the thought of beginning an exercise program of any kind can be especially challenging. For people carrying extra weight, certain exercises may be too difficult or physically uncomfortable to perform. But there are options to help get you moving in the direction of a healthier weight and lifestyle.

How much exercise should you try: The American Heart Association recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes every week of moderate exercise, or 75 minutes every week of vigorous exercise. That can be broken down into 30 minutes of exercise, five days a week. But experts agree that getting any amount of physical activity is preferable to none.

What exercises to try: Here are some ideas offered by physical fitness experts that are especially helpful to those of us who are carrying some extra weight.

  • Walking: Choose a convenient time of day for your routine. Early mornings or after dinner, it doesn’t really matter as long as you keep a brisk pace for at least 5 minutes at a time. You can slow down or take a break if you get tired and start again.
  • Water Aerobics: Not only is this fun and refreshing (especially in warm weather) but a well-planned water exercise routine offers all the benefits with lower stress to your knees and joints. The City of El Paso offers free or low-cost water aerobics classes. Visit: https://www.elpasotexas.gov/parks-and-recreation/aquatics/aquatic-centers/
  • Stationary Bike: If you happen to have access to a stationary bike, this is a great way to start an exercise program. You can control how long, how fast and how hard you work out and if you get tired, you are already home!
