Overcoming common exercise pitfalls

Overcoming common exercise pitfalls

12 Oct 2021 by Ted Escobedo   2 min read

Most everyone can agree the exercise is good for you. But many of us have trouble starting or sticking to a workout routine. Here are some common exercise pitfalls and how to avoid them.

  • Working Out for Weight Loss
  • One of the top reasons for starting a fitness program is weight loss. It’s a surprisingly bad motivator when it comes to getting you to stick to exercising. In one study, some women exercised to lose weight. Other women, who exercised to feel better and curb stress, worked out more. The fix: remind yourself of all the ways exercise makes you feel good, like having more energy and getting better rest, that have nothing to do with weight loss.

  • You’re Going Overboard
  • Too many people dive in, overdo it, and then quit because it is just too much to sustain. The fix: Ease into an exercise routine and start slowly, maybe with just 5 minutes of walking per day if you're not active now.
  • You Feel Bad About Your Body
  • If you’re self-conscious about your stomach when you do a sit-up, or you don’t like the way you look in yoga pants you are already beginning in a negative space. The fix: search online for supportive activity groups for adults of all sizes. Working out in the privacy of your own home is another option.
  • You Chose the Wrong Workout
  • For an exercise routine to be sustainable, you must like it. Making yourself do sit-ups or run is fine - unless you hate to run or do sit-ups. Chances are good that if you already have a bad feeling about your workout, you will not stick to it. The fix: Find a physical activity that is fun for you. Basketball, swimming, walking in the mountains – whatever feels like it is not work. The more you enjoy your workout the more you are likely to make it a part of your life.
