Seasonal allergies can contribute to emotional distress. In fact, some studies have shown a correlation between allergies and an increased risk of developing mood disorders, including depression. The research offers several contributing factors, here are a few:
Inflammation: Allergic reactions trigger inflammation, which can release chemicals that affect the brain and mood.
Sleep disturbances: Allergies can cause nasal congestion, sneezing, and coughing, which can disrupt sleep and contribute to fatigue and irritability.
Stress and frustration: Dealing with chronic allergies can be stressful and frustrating, leading to emotional distress.
Social isolation: Some people with allergies may avoid social situations due to their symptoms, which can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation.
While these symptoms may only be temporary, if depression or anxiety persist, it is highly recommended to visit with your health care professional.
