August 3, 2024, marks five years since amass shooter came into our beloved Sun City and changed us forever. The UTEP Department of Theatre and Dance, in collaboration with the Mexican American Cultural Center, presents Acts of Kindness: The El Paso Play. Acts of Kindness is a theatrical montage inspired by interviews in El Paso, Texas, in the year after a mass shooting at a Walmart that claimed the lives of twenty-three innocent people. Staged for the first time in our city, this play is told through various characters and documentary information; the play grapples with gun control, the divided political landscape, and the ongoing immigration issue in America. Heartfelt, engrossing, and intimate, the play is a tribute to victims and survivors of the event and a cautionary tale about gun violence in America. Against the most traumatic events, a community rises to reach for collective healing and an understanding of our shared humanity. Part verbatim, part dramatized, this production strives to honor, reflect, and heal our Frontera community while not allowing us and the world not to forget.
