Ubuntu: Understanding interconnectedness
24 Apr 2020 by Ted Escobedo 1 min read
Here is a story that has gained popularity on social media: An anthropologist introduced a new game to children in an African tribe. He placed a large basket of fruit under a tree. He then told the children that the first to reach the basket would win all the fruit. When the children were told to start the race, they all joined hands and ran together in one connected group. When asked why they did that, the answer was ‘Ubuntu. How can one of us be happy if all the others are sad?’
Ubuntu is the ancient tribal word meaning human-ness. Or, human kindness. Through this practice of kindness the philosophy says, I am what I am because of who we all are.
