Yerba buena or hierba buena is the Spanish name for a number of aromatic plants, most of which belong to the mint family. Yerba buena translates as ‘good herb.’ Many El Paso families share stories about how their grandmothers would serve hierba buena for an upset stomach and they knew exactly what they were doing. Spearmint is commonly used to help relieve symptoms of indigestion, vomiting and gas. It contains compounds like carvone, which is naturally found in spearmint, and has been shown to strongly inhibit muscle contractions in the digestive tract.
