Scream: Letting it all out
30 May 2020 by Ted Escobedo 2 min read
Primal screaming as a therapeutic tool was developed by Arthur Yanov in the 1970s. He believed that it was people repressing former traumas that created stress and tension in their present so he encouraged them to regress and relive their traumas, often screaming in the process. His notable patients included John Lennon and Yoko Ono. “For the first time in the history of psychology there is a way to access feelings, hidden away, in a safe way and thus to reduce human suffering. It is, in essence, the first science of psychotherapy,” Yanov wrote.
You don’t necessarily have to have a deep rooted childhood memory that has been buried in your psyche for decades to reap the benefits of a good scream. Here are a few ways you can scream your way to a more peaceful life:
1. Get yourself somewhere you can be alone.
2. Lie down.
3. Think of what it is that is stressing you out and why it is doing this.
4. SCREAM. Let it all out! You can also add a pounding fist if you want or maybe just throw your arms up in the air.
It sounds crazy, but scream therapy works for many people. Try it. Just warn your housemates in advance.
