Now is the time to be kind

Now is the time to be kind

During this Covid Crisis many people have taken to social media with a two-word message: Be Kind. It’s a simple suggestion, it looks good on a t-shirt or cap and really, who could disagree with that advice? But what does ‘Be Kind’ mean?

First and foremost, being kind begins with how you treat yourself. One cannot practice true kindness to others unless they are willing to practice self-kindness. This begins by forgiving yourself for past mistakes and approaching your own life with compassion and understanding. Once you have learned to be kind to yourself, spreading that kindness starts to become second nature.

Not too long ago, kindness could be spread with a simple smile. Now, protective masks make it impossible to read someone’s expression. Today kindness can best be expressed through words and actions. Here are some ideas:

  • Pick up the tab for an elderly person at a grocery store
  • Leave a note and a cold bottle of water by your mailbox for your carrier or delivery person.
  • Send an early Christmas card and gifts as a surprise for a loved one.
  • Share a heart-felt compliment with a friend on their social media post.
  • Donate or Volunteer at a food bank.
  • Like kindness itself, there are no limits to what you can do. It creates a ripple effect and it also spreads quickly.
