New initiative asks El Paso men to ‘be a bro!’

31 Oct 2022 by Ted Escobedo   2 min read

The Rio Grande Cancer Foundation is launching a new initiative for the month of November that is focused on an often-overlooked cause in the borderland: Men’s Health and Cancer Awareness.

‘Brovember’ is modeled after similar national campaigns but has a distinctly El Paso flavor. Men all over El Paso are being invited to shave or trim their beards on November 1 and let it grow for the next 30 days. The contestants will be given their own web page where their friends and family can vote for them. The contestant with the most votes on December 5 will win a grand prize and can bask in the knowledge that he helped share vital health information that affects men of all ages. In addition, the RGCF will provide easy to share social media posts that spread awareness. As a special bonus, contestants who are especially creative in spreading cancer awareness on social media will be awarded gift cards on a weekly basis.

Executive Director of the RGCF, Carol Bohle, believes that one of the best ways to share information about cancer prevention and general health awareness is to let men ‘talk among themselves.’

“Brovember encourages men to start a conversation about their health. Many men tend to shy away from talking about cancer and other health concerns. With this fun and engaging social campaign, it will spread awareness and more than a few smiles. We decided that Brovember is a great way to share our message about the extreme importance of establishing a relationship with a doctor, not just for screening, but for overall health. Prostate cancer affects more men in El Paso than any other cancer. Living a healthy lifestyle and detecting cancer early is the number one way to encourage survivorship,“ said Bohle. Contestants can register at www.rgcf/brovember for more information.
