Everyday Activities Count as Exercise

Everyday Activities Count as Exercise

Your body burns fuel doing everyday activities. Scientists call it ‘non-exercise activity thermogenesis.’ You use energy when walking up stairs or lifting grocery bags. With that in mind, you can turn everyday activities into calorie-burning opportunities. Here are some ideas:

1. Shopping

Whether at the grocery store, super store or mall, shopping involves walking, and walking burns calories. You can get an even better workout by parking far from the store’s entrance and avoiding elevators and escalators. Bonus: Try two stairs at a time to really get things moving.

2. Cleaning

Household chores like vacuuming or sweeping is good for burning up to 150 calories per hour. Crank up the smart speaker and pick up the pace for an even more intense workout. Oh, andnext time you do laundry, pick up the basket and twist your torso from side to side for a few reps—you’ve just snuck in a quick oblique workout.

3. Cooking

Working in the kitchen can help keep you fit. Chopping vegetables, washing pots and pans, and hand mixing burns around 75 calories in 30 minutes.
