10,000 steps a day may set the bar too high

With cell phone having built in pedometers, walking 10,000 steps a day has been set as the gold standard. But that may not be true for everyone.

Experts say that by setting the bar too high, it is likely that you are setting yourself up for disappointment and may lead to you abandoning your fitness goals all together.

Instead, try to work up to at least 8,000 steps a day but get there gradually. First, determine exactly how many steps you are able to realistically achieve a day. By establishing your step number, experts encourage you to do work to double it.

People who doubled their steps from 4,000 to 8,000 lowered their risk of death from heart disease and cancer by 51 percent. Experts also noted that the ‘magic number’ of 10,000 steps a day has not been attributed to any additional benefits.
